Denis White
“Fatha” — Yorkshire Grit

A Yorkshire Character. A Respected Angler. A True Legend.
A PERSONAL TRIBUTE
Denis White — The Man They Called “Fatha”
Some anglers are remembered for the championships they win. Others are remembered for the friendships they make, the knowledge they share and the influence they have on those around them.
Denis White belongs among those special characters whose contribution to match fishing goes far beyond the results sheet.
Known affectionately as “Fatha”, Denis became a respected figure in Yorkshire angling, a member of the famous Barnsley Blacks and a friend and mentor to many.
THE EARLY YEARS
From Yorkshire Roots to Angling Fame

A young Denis White, long before the later years of his remarkable angling career.
Denis came from the Yorkshire mining community, where hard work, determination and a strong sense of comradeship were part of everyday life.
Those same qualities became part of his character on the match fishing circuit. He understood the importance of effort, teamwork and helping fellow anglers improve.
A GREAT YORKSHIRE TEAM
The Barnsley Blacks

For generations of match anglers, the name Barnsley Blacks has represented determination, ability and the fierce competitive spirit of Yorkshire fishing.
Denis, 2nd from the left in the middle row, was part of that remarkable angling tradition, alongside some of the sport’s best-known personalities.
A team built on friendship, experience and the determination to succeed.
FRIENDS THROUGH FISHING
Denis White and Tommy Pickering
One of the great friendships in Yorkshire match fishing is that between Denis White and Tommy Pickering.
Their shared roots in the mining communities, their love of competitive fishing and their years on the bank created a bond that extended well beyond the sport.
Tommy went on to become World Champion in 1989, while Denis remained one of the characters and influences who helped make Yorkshire match fishing such a formidable force.
The affection behind the nickname “Fatha” says much about the place Denis holds in the hearts of those who know him.
MY PERSONAL MEMORIES
A Friendship Worth Celebrating

Denis and me — one of those wonderful moments of friendship that fishing brings into our lives.
Looking at this photograph brings back the warmth, humour and camaraderie that have made my years in match fishing so rewarding.
For me, Denis has always been much more than a name in angling history. He is one of those characters who make the sport memorable.
THE STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC
Why I Wrote This Song
When I began writing musical tributes to the legends I have known throughout my fishing life, Denis White was someone I wanted to include.
His Yorkshire grit, his humour, his friendship with Tommy Pickering and the respect he has earned from fellow anglers deserved their own musical tribute.
I was particularly touched by Denis’s emotional reaction when he heard his song. Moments like that remind me why I began this project in the first place.
These songs are not simply about winning trophies. They are about preserving the memories, friendships and characters that have made our sport so special.
