LEGENDS IN MY LIFETIME

LARRY POWELL

My Mentor

The Man Who Helped Shape a World Champion

A Remarkable Angler and Friend

Long before I became World Champion in 1987,
I was a young Cardiff angler with everything to learn.

Larry Powell was one of the finest match anglers
South Wales had produced. His knowledge, generosity
and wonderful sense of humour made him unforgettable.

Our friendship began when Larry stopped his car
to help me after I had fallen off my bicycle
while carrying my fishing tackle.

That chance encounter changed my fishing life.
Larry taught me the importance of preparation,
observation and the little details that make
the difference between catching fish and winning matches.

Sadly, Larry died at just 41, never living to see
the young angler he had helped become World Champion.

Why I Wrote This Song

Larry was much more than my first fishing mentor.
He was a friend who shared his knowledge,
encouraged young anglers and filled our fishing
adventures with laughter.

I wrote Larry Powell: My Mentor
to thank him for the lessons that stayed with me
throughout my career, and to honour a man
I never had the opportunity to say goodbye to.

Larry, this one is for you.
