LEGENDS IN MY LIFETIME

RICHARD WALKER

The Man Who Changed Angling

The Angler Who Taught Me to Think

I never had the pleasure of meeting Richard Walker, but few anglers influenced my early fishing life more than he did.

Growing up in Cardiff, I eagerly awaited the Angling Times. Walker’s articles were always the first I turned to. His remarkable knowledge, questioning mind and willingness to challenge accepted ideas fascinated me.

One article in particular stayed with me. He described an almost sixth sense for understanding where fish might be lying beneath the surface. From that day onwards, I began picturing the fish in my swim rather than simply casting and hoping.

Years later, on the Bristol Avon, that way of thinking helped me find extra fish by changing baits and casting into a particular area of my swim. It even helped me win some money that day!

Walker was famous for his record carp, his tackle innovations and his writing. But to me, his greatest contribution was teaching anglers to observe, question and think.

Why I Wrote This Song

Richard Walker helped shape my fishing long before I became a World Champion. Although we never met, his words stayed with me throughout my angling career.

I wrote Richard Walker – The Man Who Changed Angling to thank him for teaching me to look beneath the surface, trust my observations and never stop learning.

Richard, this one’s for you.
