LEGENDS IN MY LIFETIME
STEVE GARDNER

MR CONSISTENT
Twenty-Seven Years • Eleven World Team Golds • A Lifetime of Dedication
Some champions are remembered for one extraordinary victory. Others prove their greatness year after year.
A Remarkable England International

For twenty-seven years, from 1987 to 2013, Steve Gardner represented England at the highest level of international match fishing. His record included eleven World Championship team gold medals, three team silvers and two team bronzes, alongside an individual World Championship silver medal in 1988.
Steve was known throughout the international match fishing world as Mr Consistent — a nickname that reflected his preparation, dependability and remarkable commitment to his country.
Belgium, 1988 — So Close to World Gold
At the 1988 World Championships on the Damme Canal in Belgium, Steve finished runner-up to Jean-Pierre Fougeat of France, taking the individual silver medal.
I was there representing Wales and remember the championship well. It was another occasion when I witnessed the extraordinary standard of anglers competing on the international stage.
Bulgaria, 1989 — A Personal Memory

One year later, our paths crossed again at the World Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Steve was representing England and I was fishing for Wales.
We shared a section during the championship, and I still remember catching twenty-three pounds on the second day. Wales went on to win the team gold medal, while England took bronze.
It remains one of the proudest memories of my own international fishing career.
Why I Wrote This Song
Steve and I were never particularly close friends, but whenever we met at international championships, he would always say hello. He was polite, friendly, and respected by his fellow competitors.
One memory that has stayed with me is watching Steve prepare his bait before a match. Everything was done carefully and methodically, with tremendous attention to detail. He was a fiercely competitive angler when the whistle blew, but a gentleman away from the bank.
That quiet professionalism, together with his extraordinary record representing England, inspired me to write Mr Consistent.
Not every great champion needs an individual World gold medal to establish a lasting legacy. Steve Gardner’s twenty-seven years of dedication speak for themselves.
